Get it done right!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

So, a few weeks ago, Jim and I had an unwelcome surprise: Aaron Mayo, the man who was helping us plan our wedding at one Eleven, has left the company. We wish Aaron the best of luck and know that he will do well wherever he goes, but where, exactly did that leave us? Luckily, we know just the person to step in and fill the breech: Amy Parman with Williamson County Weddings!

Amy was amazing when she helped us with Alexis’ wedding last year, so we knew right from the start that she would be easy to work with and do everything she could to help us get the wedding we want. When you sign on with Williamson County Weddings and their experienced team of planners, you are guaranteeing yourself not only a beautiful wedding, but also a stress-free (as much as possible) wedding day. She was there from start to finish with Alexis, and we know she’ll be there for us as well, doing what she can to get the vendors we need at a great price!

Check out their website for more information: Williamson County Weddings!
Thanks Amy!

And the winner is…

It has begun in earnest!  The date has been set, the venue chosen and even the officiant secured!  (Cheers & choirs of angels!)  It was a busy week.  Jim and I took Lucinda and Alexis to see One Eleven and Chappy’s

Chappy's on Church

Chappy's on Church

(heretofore I have not written about Chappy’s- let me catch you up briefly: Chappy’s on Church is a French Creole restaurant in downtown Nashville- Fantastic Food!  (They even do that wrapping your leftovers in aluminum foil shaped like a swan thing- I know, easily amused am I!)  We were looking through the Pink Book and saw, to our surprise, that Chappy’s has a ballroom!  The Napoleon Ballroom has a capacity for 300 people, beautiful imported glass chandeliers, and  fountains with lion heads lining the walls!

The Bride Room (sorry, no pics of the ballroom)

The Bride Room (sorry, no pics of the ballroom)

The best part- the room is free!  That is, they require a minimum amount of $5,000 spent of the food & spirits, but the room is complimentary complete with tables,  chairs and linens!  They will even do the flowers and a custom menu for your event!  They have several packages for the food and spirits, so it’s easy to figure out what you want and they will do anything from a multi-course sit-down meal to a buffet with appetizers served on trays.  It’s really a great deal for a beautiful room that requires very little decoration (mostly just table decorations and maybe a few flowers here and there) and really great food!  The people there are very friendly and helpful (Thanks Suzette, Lucian and, of course, Chappy!)- it’s really a fun place.)

Now, I realize that, after a review like that, you’re expecting my announcement to be that we chose Chappy’s….but we didn’t.  We decided that we wanted to have little more control over the feel of the room- it didn’t quite fit with our vision already and there was very little we could do about it- in the end, we decided that it was not quite the right fit for for us despite its many attractions, but it was a close one (we may just try to get them to cater)!  We have chosen…(drum roll)…One Eleven!  Hurray!

One Eleven

So- we are getting married on October 4, 2009 at One Eleven!  It’s such a relief to have actual progress- not we just have to figure everything else out!  ;)

Wish me luck!

More Venues!

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

The search for the perfect wedding venue continues- I know, we’re slow.  This last week we visited a few more locations that were fairly promising.

The first was One Eleven.

One Eleven

One Eleven

This is a relatively new venue on Broadway downtown in Nashville.  It’s an incredibly versatile site which has done mostly corporate events thus far (They’re having their first wedding in May 2009).  What’s great about this space is, well, the view!

The View

The View

Lots of great downtown city scape to look at and the ability to move in or out of doors depending on the weather.  The observation deck is completely uncovered (but can be tented) allowing guests to mingle in the open air and look out over the city.  The Patio is roofed, but one side is open to the air as well (again, this can be covered should the weather prove inclement) and there is plenty of room for either dancing or setting up tables for eating and chatting.

The Patio- Glass on one side, open air on another!

The Patio- Glass on one side, open air on another!

Sandwiched between the observation deck and the patio is the penthouse- this is only completely closed room in this venue- it is completely walled with large glass windows to allow the indoor people a clear view of everything going on in either outdoor location and there are lots of glass doors that could be left open to provide easy traffic flow (this would however ruin the air conditioning! ;) ).

The Penthouse

What was especially nice (aside from the space itself) was how calm and welcoming the Aaron Mayo was when he showed us the space.  He was completely open to doing anything we could think of and welcomed any new ideas we had on how best to use the space.  It was so pleasant to have someone who was open to anything and willing to help as much or as little as we wanted.  Thanks Aaron!

That was our favorite of the day!

Currently our favorites are:

The aVenue (we still love the warm wood of that space!) and One Eleven.

Thoughts?  We’re looking for ideas, so any suggestions would be useful!  We’re really hoping to come to a final decision within the next week or so.  And on Monday- the quest for the dress begins…

Wish me luck!!

Valentine's at Adornments!

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

As promised previously, I have finished the Valentine’s Heart Pendants!!

Valentine's Heart Pendant

Valentine's Heart Pendant

I apologize for the poor photo quality..but you get the idea right? For those of  who are really paying attention, no the image hasn’t been flipped… They are all a little different, this isn’t the same pendant that I put up an in progress picture of.  They even come in different sizes. What would be the fun in making them all the same??

So today we set up a lovely Valentine’s display in our store, assembling all of our more romantic jewelry (ie. rings, heart pendants, rose quartz jewerly, and some of the Embrace series) along with one of our wood turned ikebana holders (ikebana is the Japanese art form of flower arranging, it’s gaining in popularity in the U.S. so local wood workers have taken up the task of making beautiful holders!) and of course, the obligatory roses!

Valentine's Day at Adornments!

Of course, we’ve decorated the rest of the store a little too, but this is where we wanted to highlight a few pieces.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It's that time of year again..time for shopping!

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

That’s right! St. Valentine’s Day!!

The day when boyfriends and husbands hit the street in their last minute attempts to find something special and meaningful for their honeys! :) Yay! And all of us ladies wait in anticipation of what this year will bring- and what could be better than jewelry?

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for something UNIQUE, then you’ll have to look beyond the tradtional jewelry stores… They’re busy competing with each other to sell the most “Open Heart Pendants.”

Open Heart Pendant

Open Heart Pendant

Generally speaking, I try very hard to refrain from negative criticism of other jeweler’s work. I’m all for new ideas! But come on, really? Is this really what ladies are looking for? This pendant was based on the painting of actress, Jane Seymour… wow.. They don’t really even look like hearts- more like a diamond encrusted ‘Z’.  And OPEN hearts? What message is that sending to the one you love?? Enough said.

So, clearly it is my mission to create something a little romantic, a little unique, and, of course, beautiful to give you guys another option! Of course… I only have 4 days left, there’s only so many I can make! Valentine’s is almost upon us. So, in honor of this momentous occassion (at least, we hope it will be momentous! Come on guys, get out and come shopping over here!!), I’ve designed some limited edition heart pendants!

Silver Heart Pendant - in progress!

Silver Heart Pendant - in progress!

Now, this is the first one, and it’s not finished yet! I got so excited about it, I just had to show you! I’ll put a final pic up just as soon as it’s done! I”m planning on setting a faceted red garnet  there at the top. So now, ladies, if you like it, it’s a good time to start dopping some hints. Fellas, the ball’s in your court! ;)

How we do…

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Welcome to the studio for a quick tour on how we do what we do!

Just to give you an idea of how we go about creating a commissioned piece for you, here’s an example of one that I (Alexis) did recently! For all you Twilight fans out there, the project was to make a bracelet much like the one Bella wore to the prom.  We were still in the construction process on our new store front when in walked Faith, with poster in hand. She asked me if I could make her a bracelet (for her parent’s to give to her for Christmas, hehe). Surveying the destruction around me and the hopeful look on her face, I made a snap decision, “Of course, I can! I’ll have it to you before our grand opening on Dec. 20th.”  We discussed her budget and what she liked about the bracelet (pretty much every thing!) and whether there were any changes she wanted. The original (it’s a little hard to tell from the picture) seems to be a cuff bracelet with a turquoise cabochon. With movie posters for inspiration, I set to ordering materials.

Bella & Edward at Prom

With an idea in the brain, once the materials arrived, I set to work. The challenge of course is to turn this into the picture above…

Work bench and materials for Bella bracelet.

Well, I won’t take you through what happened next step by step (I’m sure it’s far too technical anyways and I wouldn’t want to completely destroy the mystery for you), but after much cutting, soldering, and melting metal into small balls, this is what I came up with.

Faith's Bella Bracelet

Faith's Bella Bracelet

It’s pretty close to the original as far as I can tell, but completely fabricated by hand (so, probably way cooler than the one in the poster). I think it turned out pretty well!
And that’s basically how we go about doing a commission! If you’re interested in starting a project with us, let us know! So, what’s next for me? Well… I haven’t played with chainmail in awhile… :)

Venues, venues, venues…!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

So on Monday, Jim and I took the crew (my mother, my sister, and Jim’s mother) to see some potential venues. We were feeling pretty flexible about venues when we started. The only real opinions we had were: we’d like the ceremony and reception to be at the same place- it just makes things so much less stressful in that there’s no having to coordinate two venues and no need to travel between them on the day of the wedding, and we are pretty sure we don’t want a traditional church wedding as neither of us have a church or priest that we are particularly fond of, so we’d feel more comfortable at a more secular venue…we think… ;) (don’t hold us to that as we may change our minds at any moment!)

We began at The Belmont Mansion:
Belmont Mansion

The Belmont mansion is an historical site…the website doesn’t have very many pictures so it was very difficult to visualize where the ceremony would take place so we had to go in person to even get a sense for the place. It’s located on Belmont campus- so dodging students was a must as we drove there to find… No Parking! There was a tour going on so their few parking spaces were completely filled. The mansion staff provided us with guest passes to park on the round about in front of the mansion to avoid being towed. We found the mansion to be disappointing, in all honesty. The staff were largely unhelpful and conveyed the impression that they could care less if we wanted to get married there or not. That may be a result of the popularity of that venue-they didn’t need our business- a popularity which was surprising given the lack of flexibility in ceremony/reception options-they told us exactly where the ceremony would take place (no choices)- and it was in front of a series of windows that face the back of another building! The room is long and rectangular with pillars, so we knew right away that the reception would be difficult if we wanted dancing… and we do!There is a lovely staircase

Belmont Staircase

Belmont Staircase

(which is apparently unstable- there can only be a few people on it at a time) for the bride to walk down from the bride room. The bridal prep room itself, we never saw as they did not take us up there to see it- but we were told that it was a small, spare room with no bathroom. Conversely, the groom’s prep room is downstairs just off the ceremony room- with a bathroom because “grooms have a tendency to throw up more than brides” and it was conveniently near the backdoor “in case he wants to run away.” I’m sure the staff member that we spoke to intended this to be funny, but we found them to be largely inappropriate and crass especially as they were said in front of the groom and his mother! So, all in all- not a good experience! We will not be getting married at the Belmont Mansion! Check! :) Hey, it’s a useful thing to know- you have to check places off as definite no’s on your way to finding the venue that is right for you. On the up side, we learned more about what we wanted from a venue- namely: flexibility/options, more room for dancing, and helpful/friendly staff to work with!

The next stop was through a company called Nashville Event Space and they have several locations that they offer along with an event coordinator to work with you and all of the vendors that you’ll inevitably need.

3rd aVenue

3rd aVenue

First, we went to 3rd aVenue- conveniently on 3rd avenue south, it’s has a quiet, rather unnoticeable exterior, but the interior is great! There are three levels- the main floor is all warm wood and semi-industrial fixtures. It’s a blank canvas for you work your magic on in any way you can imagine. There’s a stage at one end (for a band?) and plenty of dancing space if you want it (We do! We do!!).

3rd aVenue Loft

3rd aVenue Loft

The top level is a loft from which you can over look the goings on on the main floor- so a nice quiet(er) place a retreat to for cooling off, chatting, mingling- all the things you want to be able to do when you’re not making the rounds or getting your dance on. There is a basement as well- a cool place a chill out and have cocktails while the main room is flipped from ceremony to reception or just another retreat for people to cool off and chat. The “green” room is located down there as well- a funky good-sized room for pre-wedding prep and relaxation with a semi-secret staircase back up to the main floor for a dramatic entrance!

3rd aVenue

3rd aVenue

What we loved about this venue was it’s flexibility and comfortable. We felt that there was a comfortable place for all of our guests regardless of their age or entertainment inclinations- the 80 year old grandparents can settle on couches to be near the action but still comfortable, the guys can retreat to the loft to do their male bonding rituals, extended family can meet around bistro tables and catch up on family news while they munch on whatever treats we decide on… :) The only question we have about this venue currently is about catering. All of the catering for Nashville Event Space is provided by Chef’s Market. We have no idea what their food is like. They do have a cafe’ in Goodlettsville, so we’re planning a trip to go try them out and see if they are worthy!! :)

The last stop on Monday was another Nashville Event Space- The Sound Stage.

Sound Stage

Sound Stage

Reportedly, lots of local big name music stars like to rehearse and record there as there is a professional-quality stage and music system. Admittedly, an odd choice for a wedding venue- I don’t think they’ve ever done one there before, but it’s a really nice room. Of course it is just in a big warehouse on a miscellanious side street, so not a pretty venue from the outside, but that could just make the impact of the inside that much greater! It’s a blank canvas as well- a large black room, unfortunately carpeted so we would have to rent a dance floor for the reception- but the acoustics would be amazing and we could do some really interesting things with light to liven the place up.

Sound Stage

Sound Stage

The down sides are that there are no retreats for people who may not be that in to the music- there’s no getting away from it in that room. It’s something to think about, but the comfort of our guests is very important to us, so that may be a deal-breaker.

What we loved about the Nashville Event Spaces was that they were very flexible, welcoming and seemed genuinely excited to work with us- we never once felt like they were rushing us out or unwilling to consider doing things differently. They said several times that they would be as much or as little involved as we wanted them to be- they were happy to help with anything we wanted them to- that was a relief- you really got the sense that they cared about making sure that you were getting what you wanted.

At the end of the day- we were drained…who wouldn’t be? We had a lot of new information to consider and discuss, but we made good progress on defining our wants and needs for a venue, but we didn’t leave feeling that “Oh, yes! This is it!” that you always hope for. We would be happy, we think, at the 3rd aVenue location- but we have to confirm that the food is up to our standards first! We’ll let you know how that goes!

Wish me luck!
